Fall Wardrobe Style Guide for Perfect Photo Sessions in Ottawa

Ottawa PHOTOGRAPHER

Hey there, lovely Ottawa families! 🍁

As Ottawa transitions from summer warmth to the cool embrace of fall, the city comes alive with the magic of burnt oranges, golden yellows, and rich reds. October paints the Capital City in vibrant hues, setting the stage for memorable family photos.

The challenge? Styling your shoot to embody the essence of the season. Read on for a detailed style guide to ensure your photos capture not only the beauty of Ottawa in fall but also the bond of your family.

1. Layer It On!

Let’s play a game called ‘How Many Layers Can You Wear?’. Just kidding! But seriously, layering achieves two objectives – practicality against Ottawa’s ever-changing autumn weather and adding depth and texture to your outfits. Imagine cardigans draped over dresses or vests complementing button-up shirts. For children, a cute vest paired with a collared shirt can work wonders. Layers also offer flexibility, allowing you to switch up your look without multiple outfit changes. For instance, a sweater over a button-down can be removed to reveal a whole new look, or dresses can be coupled with tights and boots for added warmth and style.

2. Colours to Love and Flaunt

  • Earth Tones: These hues are your new BFFs. They’ll play so nicely with Ottawa’s fall scenery. Warm browns, rustic oranges – they’re like a warm hug!
  • Jewel Tones: Want to stand out? Say hello to emerald, royal blue, and burgundy. They’re like the fun aunt of the colour family.
  • Neutral Palettes: Think of these as unsung heroes. Soft beige, off-white, and cool gray can pop those vibrant fall colours!

3. Patterns & Prints

Patterns can uplift an outfit but use them wisely. Opt for a single patterned piece and surround it with solids to ensure balance. Choices like classic plaid, muted florals, and understated stripes fit the season perfectly.

4. Accessories Make the Difference

Let’s jazz things up! Fun hats (beanies for the win), snuggly scarves, playful gloves, and even some bling-bling can change your look faster than you can say “Pumpkin Spice Latte.” Remember, it’s the little things!

5. Comfort is Queen (and King)

Nobody wants that “my shoes are killing me” look in their photos. Pick outfits that let you jump, play, or even have an impromptu dance-off. We want smiles, not winces!

6. Shoes, Shoes, Shoes!

Shoes set the tone. Now, while I love a fab heel as much as the next gal, let’s save them for another day. While style is essential, comfort reigns supreme. Women might consider flat boots or loafers in fall shades like brown or burgundy. Men, on the other hand, could lean towards casual loafers or suede boots. Kids should have shoes that let them frolic – think comfy sneakers or stylish booties. Rather than matching shoes precisely, harmonize with each other’s choices to achieve a cohesive yet unique look.

7. Kiddo Style Fun

Kids bring a whimsical touch to photos. Outfit them in playful pieces like patterned tights, suspenders, or tutu skirts. However, ensure their attire doesn’t restrict their natural urge to explore and play. Please do your best to avoid large prints (a.k.a. GAP or some other quote I otherwise love, but just not for your photos)!

8. Together but Unique

Here’s the secret sauce: coordinate, don’t clone. Mix up those colours, patterns, and styles to let each family member’s unique personality shine but still look like you all belong on the same style page.

Fall is more than a season; it’s a mood, a feeling. And with this guide, you’re now equipped to translate that into impeccable family photos. But always remember, these are guidelines, not rules. Let your family’s unique spirit shine through, for that’s what truly makes a photo timeless.
